DIY Guide: Clean Your AC Remote Control the Right Way

An AC remote control is something we generally use every day. Rarely do we stop and think about cleaning it. Dust, oils from fingers, food particles, and much else accumulate on it as days pass. Likewise, grime collects in the slight crevices between the buttons. It can result in bacterial growth. A dirty AC remote control could stop working and eventually become an unhygienic accessory.

However, cleaning an AC remote control is easier than you think.

Why Should You Keep the Remote Clean?

AC remote controls are commonly tossed around the house. People forget them on the kitchen counter, sofa, and bedside table. This exposes them to dirt and stains. We touch our remotes frequently throughout the day. Consequently, we unknowingly expose ourselves to many bacteria and infections from the stained AC remote control.

Cleaning helps retain the remote in a neat state, and well-cleaned buttons run smoothly. It is also a preventive measure against germs and bacteria.

 What You Will Need

Before you start, assemble these items:

  1. A soft microfiber cloth
  2. Cotton swabs or a soft brush
  3. Mild soap or 70% isopropanol
  4. A small bowl of water
  5. Toothpicks (optional)
  6. Compressed air (optional)

Gather these tools to make the cleaning process easier and faster.

How to Clean an AC Remote

 1. Remove the Batteries

It is a crucial step because you cannot clean your AC remote control with the batteries on. So, take out the batteries. It helps avoid accidental button presses. It also guards the batteries from exposure to moisture.

 2. Wipe the Remote

Wipe away dirt stains and loose dust using a dry microfiber cloth. Use the cotton swabs or soft brush around buttons, if needed. Another technique is blowing away dust with compressed air. It helps you get to the inaccessible corners.
Never tap or shake the AC remote control, as doing so could damage it.

3. Scrub in Between the Buttons

Dip a cotton swab into the soapy water or alcohol solution. It must be damp, not dripping. Use this to wipe between the buttons where most dirt usually accumulates.

If there is dirt stuck on the edges, gently scrape it away with a toothpick. Be very careful not to scratch the remote.

4. Disinfect the Outer Shell

Now, wipe the front, sides, and back of the remote with a corner of a microfiber cloth dampened with isopropanol or soapy water. The isopropanol will dry fast and help disinfect the remote. Use liquid sparingly. Excess moisture can be bad for the internal components.

 5. Dry

Now, wipe with a dry cloth. It can help remove any moisture from the remote. Next, leave it to air dry for 15-20 minutes. Once fully dry, reinsert the batteries.

Never use hot air to dry faster. Hot air can melt the plastic or warp it.

 Additional Tips

Say no to harsh chemicals. Bleach, or any other strong cleaners, can erode these buttons or wipe off the labels.

Do not spray the liquid directly onto the device. Spray it onto a cloth or swab.

Clean your AC remote control at least once every two weeks, especially during periods of heavy use.

Use a silicone cover, which protects from dust buildup and facilitates easier cleaning.

Summing It Up

Cleaning an AC remote control requires only a few minutes, but it’s beneficial for its working condition and your cleanliness. Regular cleaning can go a long way in hygienic matters and keeping those buttons working when needed.
